Gratitude and worship — Matthew 5:1-8

Gratitude and worship

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 5:1-8 (KJV)

  1. And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
  2. And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
  3. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  4. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
  5. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
  6. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
  7. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
  8. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Guided reflection

Read Matthew 5:1-8 slowly, then read the surrounding chapter. Watch what Jesus says and does, whom He addresses, and how people respond. Read the scene within the Gospel’s witness to His life, death and resurrection. Attend especially to Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Observe: Who is speaking or acting, and what changes across these verses? Identify a word, action or contrast in Matthew 5:1-8 that helps you explain the passage in your own words. Reflect: Which reason for gratitude comes from the text itself, even if your circumstances are difficult? Ground your answer in Matthew 5:3 and its surrounding verses. If the connection to this month’s theme is indirect, let the passage’s own meaning lead. Respond: Thank God for something specific and express appreciation to someone who has served you. Write one sentence explaining how your response follows from Matthew 5:1-8, and return to it this evening.
